The Reformed Parish in Karanac
The Reformed Parish in Karanac is a community following the Gospel and Holy Spirit invited by Jesus Christ. As a parish, it is a part of the Reformed Christian Calvinist Church in the Republic of Croatia following the essence of the entire Bible and as regarding the science and life itself is dedicated to Apostolic, Nicaean, Constantinopolitan, Ephesians, Chalcedonian and Athanasian Creed and particularly Heidelberg catechism and II Helvetian religious belief.
The services are held at 10.30 am on Sundays and holidays.
There was a reformed church in the settlement in 1576, although the village of Karanac was not located on its current position. The first minister was Karantsi István. Probably, there was a church in the old Karanac on which a parishioner repaired a door and for that paid a penalty worth a cow.
The old church built at the end of the17th or beginning of the 18th century was located at the same place as the present church is today. At the beginning of the 19 century the church was too small for the congregation because there were 874 believers.
In 1808 the villagers of Karanac began the construction of a new church in an unusual way. They did not pull down the old church but built the new one over it using the old one as scaffolding. When the new church was finished the parts of the old one were taken out through the door. The tracks of the construction of this kind can be seen inside the tower of the present church.
A peculiarity of this church is a lightning conductor placed at the top of the tower instead of star, installed in 1869 after the serious damage caused by lightning was restored.
Latest reconstructions: in 1983 the tower was plastered and the whole church painted, in 1998 the church was painted again and in 2004 the roof was reconstructed.
The organ was built by Lajos Moser in 1862. It was reconstructed at the beginning of the 20th century but during the World War I numerous organ pipes were destroyed. After a lot of decades of silence since 2006 the organ has been playing again praising the Lord.
Today the community has 109 members.
