From the history of the Parish

The Reformed Parish of Zmajevac was founded during the Reformation. It was written in the old record from 1819 that after the Reformation in Hungary, there was a reformed parish here as well. An old letter written by Sámuel Pathai P. can testify this statement and he said: «In the town of Zmajevac I found an old man Gaspár Józan, 85, who was able to name some ministers of reformed faith: the pastor Bertalan, Modis and Matyas. The most famous, dr. István Szegedi Kis used to be the parish minister in Zmajevac for 20 years, Veresmarthy 19 years, Balint Sepsei 18 years, a superintendent Gyorgy Petri 7 years and recently, János Szanki who has been with us for four years.» The school was run by István Tolnai Nyirő, János Fogtői, János Maróthi. In 1817 the Parish had the congregation of 914 people, in 1886 there was a congregation of 904 people, in 1910 – 621 people, in 1941 there were 450 people, in 1971 only 132 people and in 1999 there was a congregation of 130 people. The church was being built from 1866 to 1871 as the third church in Zmajevac. The church was devastated during the Croatian War of Independence. Recently, it has been reconstructed and is suitable for use.
